Message to Families September 23, 2024

Posted On Monday September 23, 2024

Good Day Pine Ridge Families;

As we start this week off, I would like to thank all of our parent and student drivers for their patience and co-operation on Friday at dismissal.  We sincerely appreciate everyone following the traffic flow and general etiquette through the parking lot.  The slowest time during pick up was between 2:05 – 2:12. By 2:12, the driveway and lot were quite clear of vehicles which is impressive given the volume of traffic in this short time.

Looking ahead, please take a look at the following upcoming events and general information/updates:

Post Secondary Planning Evening:

This Thursday, September 26th from 6-8 pm in our Pine Ridge cafeteria we are hosting our Post Secondary Presentation for students and families for the 2025-2026 application process.  All families interested in attending are welcome.

College/University Fairs:

On October 2nd from 12:30-2:30 we are hosting a Post-Secondary Fair at Pine Ridge for grade 11 and 12 students.  Representatives from universities and colleges will be available for students to ask questions and plan their pathways for post-secondary education.

Ontario Universities’ Fair:  October 5-6   Location: Metro Toronto Convention Centre

Ontario College Fair:   October 18 and 19  Location: Enercare Centre - Hall B,  Exhibition Place, Toronto

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) - Could it be for you?

Have you heard of SHSM, or know someone in the program, but you aren't sure what it is?  Are you interested in taking your education to the next level, earning industry certifications and having experiences that will help you in your future studies and career?  If so, SHSM might be for you!

"The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a specialized, ministry-approved program that allows students in Grades 11 and 12 to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)." - Ontario Ministry of Education

If you are in Grade 11 or 12, you may be eligible to join one of our 5 SHSM programs (Arts, Business, Environmental, Health & Wellness, and Sports).  We held two information sessions last week, but if you were not able to attend, you can still find out if you meet the requirements for the program.  Please see the following teachers for more information:

  • Arts - Mrs. Gagne (Room 2069)
  • Business - Mrs. Reid (Room 3025)
  • Environmental - Mr. Hipps (Phys Ed office)
  • Health & Wellness - Mrs. Reid (Room 3025)
  • Sports - Ms Baran (Phys Ed office)

The Environmental and Sports SHSMs require enrolment in a specific course, but students may enrol in Arts, Business, and Health & Wellness until October 25th.  It's a phenomenal program - see if it's right for you!

DECA Domino's Fundraiser - Thursday, September 26!

We had almost 70 students attend our first DECA meeting on Monday, and we're looking forward to a fantastic year of skill development, competition and team building.  Our provincial competition involves 2 nights in Toronto, competing against 5,000+ students from across Ontario, so we are asking for your help in fundraising to offset the costs.

We have paired with the Domino's Pizza locations on Dixie Road and Bayly Street to offer two phenomenal meal deals through their “Raise the Dough Family Night” program.  For every order (if you use the code provided on the attached poster), our DECA club will receive $5 to help offset the cost of our competitions.  This will be a monthly event, so save yourself the need to cook one night and support a great cause at the same time.  Feel free to share with your neighbours and friends as well.  Our DECA students thank you for your support!

DECA registration is still open.  Any interested students are welcome to come to our next meeting on Monday at lunch in Room 3025 to learn more about what DECA is and why it may be a great club for them.  Looking forward to seeing you there!
