Message to Families - June 23, 2023

Posted On Friday June 23, 2023

Dear Pine Ridge Families,

As this is our last full week with students in the building, this will be the last formal message to families.  I would also like to apologize as we did not get a communication out last week.  In the meantime, if any other important communication is needed, we will be sure to send that out in separate messaging.  Please keep a watch for the final report card distribution on July 7th.  In order to access the report card, you will need your child’s Ontario Education Number (OEN) and NOT their DDSB Student ID Number.  Please take a moment to review all of the important information below as well as take a peak at the attached flyers:

Summer School:

The summer school credit recovery program at Pine Ridge (in-person) runs from July 4-14.  Students may recover 1 or more credits during this time.  There are less than 20 seats available.  Sign-up today in myBlueprint if summer school is an option.

Summer School information for in-person, elearning and credit recovery is available at:  https://www.dce.ca/en/summer-school/summer-school-landing-page-v2.aspx.  The deadline for July credit recovery is June 29 at noon and the deadline for July full credit courses is June 27 at noon, further details on the website.  Students register for summer school using myBlueprint.

Please contact the Guidance Department if you have any questions, 905-420-1885.

Commencement News:

Congratulations to all graduating students! Below is some key information:

Ceremony- The commencement ceremony will be held on Thursday June 29th from 10:00 - 1:00 PM. (although we anticipate that it will end around 12:00 PM). The ceremony will be held at the Scarborough Convention Centre (20 Torham Place, Scarborough , M1X 0B3). A copy of the invitation is attached. All graduating students are asked to arrive at 9:00 AM so that we can organize them for the ceremony. DON'T BE LATE!!!

Guests - Formal guest tickets are not being distributed to graduating students. We are asking students to limit themselves to 4 guests, but we understand that some students with large extended families may need an extra seat or two.  We ask that families be mindful that there is limited seating. Seating will be first come first serve.  Please also be aware that certain areas will be cordoned off for donors, award presenters, teachers and honored guests. Please refrain from sitting in these areas. Staff will be there to help marshal families and guests to available seats.

Transportation to Scarborough Convention Centre - We understand that some families may not be able to get to the Scarborough Convention Centre for a variety of reasons. Please contact Jim Pulickeel (jim.pulickeel@ddsb.ca) if you are unable to get to the venue and the school will do their best to support those individuals as needed. Please reach out by the end of day Monday June 26 so that we can book the appropriate transportation and ensure seats.  Please indicate how many seats are required.

Bereavement Support and Support for Family of Anthony Dixon:

As shared earlier this week, our school experienced a tragic loss of one of our own.  Many students are impacted by the loss of Anthony Dixon and we want to ensure that families are connecting with their child at home to ensure that they are doing okay.  Supports are available through the school and also through Victim Services.  Victim Services is providing accesss to counselling without a waitlist with Durham Family Services for anyone who is a part of the community or who was present on Sunday. In addition, Victim Services is starting a support group in September for those who have lost a loved one in a homicide. If you are interested in these supports, you can call them at 905-721-4226 and press ‘0’ or go to their website: https://www.victimservicesdurham.ca/home.

Any families wishing to support the Dixon Family through this difficult time, a GoFund Me account has been set up to assist.  You can access this account via the following link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-dixon-family-with-funeral-and-memorial-cost?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_lico+share-sheet&utm_location=DASHBOARD

Our thoughts go out to all who are struggling!

Student Handbook 2023-2024:

As a school staff we have reviewed and updated our school policies and procedures to ensure that they are reflective of our current practices, population and in line with DDSB Policies and Procedures.  At this time we have attached a DRAFT copy of the handbook which we will continue to update as feedback is provided before September.  If your child is returning to Pine Ridge for September, it would be greatly appreciated if you could review the document either independently or with your child and provide us with any feedback to ensure that it is clear and has all of the necessary information to support our students in being successful while at school.  We thank you in advance for taking the time to review this information.  Please email Mrs. Monk directly with any feedback at michelle.monk@ddsb.ca.
